Brainy Mouse is a game developed to enhance the quality of life in children living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD): it facilitates them to learn and recognize words, syllables and letters while also being able to enjoy the process. The game assists in the improvement of communication, supporting its development in children with ASD while helping them become more socially interactive.
Autism is a category of pervasive developmental disorders characterized by severe impairments that mainly affect social interaction, communication, while sparing basic cognitive skills [RAPIN 1991]. Although the term autism is not newly used and there are multiples researches indicating that there is a biologic cause for this disability [CAPUCHA 2008], we still do not have a confirmation of all factors that could be the cause of autism, neither how the genetic abnormalities originated from the syndrome could progress into more serious cases of cognitive damage [GUPTA; STATE 2006].
Autism is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder that manifests itself by difficulty communicating and socially interacting with others associated with struggle using the imagination, accepting changes in the daily routine, and restricted interests and repetitive behavior, being a lifelong condition.
There is no known cure for autism, neither is there an exclusive medicament to combat the symptoms of the spectrum as a whole. In the same context, the manifestation of the signs inherent to the disorder represents a learning curve for those living with autism, since it presents the following traits: facility to get distracted; basic difficulty in organizing, giving sequence to activities, and understanding simple concepts; having trouble interacting with other people, among others indicators. All those make a demand for an adaptability in actions that can promote an effective learning system.
Even though individuals living with the spectrum present special needs, some with a substantial cognitive deficit, a multidisciplinary treatment based in methodologies that have been widely tested and applied worldwide have brought encouraging results, and it assists these children to have a better understanding of their surroundings while helping them with their alphabetization [ORRU 2009].
“The enjoyment we have in teaching the children with an innovative form of communication, based on an implicit language is fantastic. With Brainy Mouse we are creating opportunities where children are happy at the same time that they are able to develop their autonomy through reading and writing. Our team believes in the inclusion, and in the future and potential of each user of the game. This is why we put a great effort on getting our dreams achieved through each new digital project created.”Ana Sarrizo
